5 Sarasota Smash-And-Grabs Prompt Warnings

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to take precautions against crimes of opportunity.

SARASOTA, FL — A rash of smash-and-grab burglaries at Sarasota’s Benderson Park on Sunday has deputies warning residents to take steps to prevent crimes of opportunity.

The burglary spree at the 5851 Nathan Benderson Circle park took place between 4 and 4:30 p.m. July 23, the sheriff’s office reported in a Monday media release. Five vehicles were targeted in the spree. All five break-ins resulted in purses being stolen, the sheriff’s office said.

“It takes less than a minute for a thief to break your car window and snatch a purse or valuable electronics that are left in plain view,” the sheriff’s office warned. “It takes even less time to reach into vehicle that’s left unlocked and steal the cash in your console or other belongings.”

The best defense, the sheriff’s office noted, is to not leave valuables in vehicles at all. These five tips are also recommended:

  • Always keep doors locked and windows closed.
  • Hide valuables from plain sight.
  • If driving a vehicle with an open cargo area, invest in a retractable fitted cover to keep valuables hidden.
  • Stow valuables before parking – thieves watch parking lots and pay attention to people who put things in their trunks.
  • Park only in well-lit areas that are not concealed.

The sheriff’s office also recommends that people trust their instincts and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement or security.

“Plan ahead and think about where you are going, what items you absolutely need and what you could leave at the office or at home,” the agency advised.
