5 Things To Know: Maya Angelou Interview On WSLR

1. WSLR's Maternally Yours landed an exclusive interview with Maya Angelou that will air at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 26. You can listen to it on 96.5 FM or at wslr.org.

Angelou will discuss her Maya Angelou Center for Women’s Health and Wellness in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, which opens June 28. Laura Gilkey, who interviewed Angelou on behalf of her co-hostesses Ryan Stanley, Carmela Pedicini and Cheryl Kindred, also asked Dr. Angelou about racial disparity, her sources of support and health inspiration, the Midwives Model of Care, and her personal reflection on the birth of her son and on motherhood.

2.  Comedy Improv season kicks off Monday through Sept. 1 at the Goldstein Cabaret. You never know what will happen at each show as characters and sketches are made up on the go. 3. More rain is expected for today thanks to Tropical Storm Debby. About two inches of rain fell Sunday at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, according to The National Weather Service. Another inch is expected today as much of the Suncoast is expected to remain under a Tropical Storm Watch today.

4. students will pay 11 percent more for tuition in the fall, but remains the state's cheapest public university tied with Florida International University, Bradenton.com reports.

That comes out to $4,154 for your average semester worth of courses while students will pay 15 percent more paying $4,303 at the honors college.

5. Remember to update your signature if needed on your voter registration. 

“Signatures are very important in the elections process,” Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent says.  “The signatures on record with the supervisor of elections are used to check the signatures on absentee ballot and provisional ballot certificates and on candidate and initiative petitions.”

A voter whose signature may have changed due to aging, health, or other reasons is urged to update it with the SOE. Signature updates must be submitted on a Florida Voter Registration Application. Applications may be downloaded from the SOE website at www.SarasotaVotes.com or may be picked up in person at any of the three SOE offices in Sarasota, North Port and Venice, at other county offices and libraries, social service agencies, and many area banks.

Voters who are voting by mail (absentee) and who need to update their signatures must do so prior to start of the absentee ballot canvass, which is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 8.
