8 People Hurt In Chain-Reaction Crash In Sarasota County

SARASOTA, FL — Two people were seriously injured Monday and six others suffered minor injuries when an International Convertible Cab failed to stop at a traffic signal and crashed into multiple vehicles, causing a chain-reaction crash that ultimately involved eight vehicles, according to Lt. Gregory S. Bueno of Florida Highway Patrol.

Bueno said the crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Fruitville Road approaching Coburn Roadaround 3:15 p.m.

The 33-year-old driver of the International Convertible Cab was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in serious condition. He was identified as Gregory T. Werner of Nokomis, Florida.

Werner's vehicle was in the left lane approaching Coburn Road when it struck a 2015 Kia Sorento being driven by a 71-year-old woman, who was not immediately identified. She was listed in critical condition at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The five other drivers who suffered minor injuries were identified as 23-year-old April L. Malloy, 18-year-old Winter R. Spikes, 60-year-old Jeffery G. McGuiness, 36-year-old Sara L Duval and 54-year-old Stacey L. Grider-Harris all of Sarasota.

Spikes' 21-year-old sister, Kimia, also was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. She was traveling with her sister in a 2011 Toyota Camry.

Another driver, identified as 51-year-old Daniel Kropf did not suffer any injuries, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Bueno said that charges were pending in the case. He said that the crash did not appear to be alcohol related.
