Bicyclist Killed In Sarasota Crash

SARASOTA, FL --Sarasota police are investigating a traffic crash that claimed the life of a bicyclist over the weekend.

Genevieve Judge of the Sarasota Police Department said the crash occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Waldemere Street and South Tamiami Trail. The intersection was closed from 1 a.m. until about 5 a.m. as a result of the crash.

"At approximately 1 a.m., a vehicle struck and killed a bicyclist in the northbound lanes of South Tamiami Trail," Judge explained. "The vehicle was located several blocks north with two individuals inside."

The next of kin of the bicyclist had not been notified as of Monday morning.

"It is believed that speed was a factor in the crash," Judge added. "It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash."
