Coronavirus Cases Reach 36,078 On Eve Of FL's Partial Reopening

FL health officials reported a total of 36,078​ confirmed coronavirus cases on the eve of the partial reopening of the state.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported a total of 36,078 confirmed coronavirus cases in the state Sunday while the number of deaths rose to 1,379 on the eve of the planned reopening of much of the state.

The total represents an increase of 615 cases over the previous day and 15 more deaths, which is fewer than in recent days.

Seven of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Sunday. Hillsborough County reported three new deaths as did Lee County.

Miami-Dade County reported two new deaths. Palm Beach County reported one new death. Duval County reported one more death as did Leon County and Volusia County.

Florida had an 8.4 positive testing rate out of 429,970 tests that had been administered throughout the state as of Sunday.

Dozens of maskless protesters called for a complete reopening of the state in downtown Miami on Sunday. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties have been temporarily excluded from Monday's partial reopening of businesses.

Florida restaurants and retailers in most parts of the state were given the OK by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to reopen starting Monday with reduced occupancy requirements and social distancing rules in effect.

State-run parks, including some with beaches are also set to reopen Monday after being shut down since March 23. Social distancing requirements will be in effect.

Miami-Dade reported a total of 12,775 confirmed cases as of Sunday, more than any other county. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 5,309 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 3,130 cases. Those three counties account for some 60 percent of all Florida cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,281 cases as of Sunday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,434 cases.
