Deputies stopped a burglary in progress at Sarasota's Salvation Army Wednesday evening and took the suspect in custody after he hid in the store

Sarasota County Sheriff's deputies stopped a burglary in progress at The Salvation Army Wednesday evening and took the suspect in custody after he hid in the store.

Deputies responded to Salvation Army, 2280 17th St., at 8:45 p.m., for a burglary in progress and found Elijah J. Smith, 39, in the building and trying to hide from the deputies, according to a sheriff's office report. Deputies discovered the suspect attempted to seal money from cash registeres in the story after breaking a window to enter the Salvation Army, the report said.

Smith was arrested on burglary, attempted theft, and criminal mischief charges, the report said.  The suspect was transported to the North Sarasota County Jail.
