FL Deputy Shot, Killed Armed Man Outside Home

A deputy shot and killed an armed man while serving a warrant at a Venice home, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said.

VENICE, FL — A deputy shot and killed an armed man Wednesday morning at a Venice home, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Deputies with the department’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit and Patrol Unit arrived at a home on Golf Club Lane around 11 a.m. to serve an active warrant. The agency didn’t say what the warrant was for.

When they arrived, deputies confirmed the subject, 32-year-old Anthony Bottoni, was inside and told him to leave the home.

After he refused to come outside, deputies forced their way into the home and found Bottoni had armed himself with a gun, the sheriff’s office said.

When he refused to drop the weapon, deputies moved to the backyard and called in SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams.

Minutes later, he left the home with the gun and refused again to drop it. A deputy used his Taser on Bottoni, but it didn’t stop him, the sheriff’s office said.

Bottoni then pointed his gun at deputies “and gave them no option but to respond with deadly force,” SCSO said.

Deputies attempted life-saving measures on Bottoni until the Sarasota County Fire Department arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
