SARASOTA, FL — An elderly woman, who hasn’t been named, is the suspected driver in a Monday night hit-and-rush crash that left two young children dead, according to a Sarasota Police Department news release.

The crash happened in the area of North Washington Boulevard and 7th Street around 8:30 p.m., killing a 2-year-old and a 5-month-old, and critically injuring a 29-year-old woman, who were brought to area hospitals as trauma alerts.

The suspected driver was identified through community tips and she’s cooperating with investigators, police said.

Forensic testing will be done on the vehicle to confirm its involvement in the fatal crash.

“We recognize the emotional toll this tragedy has taken on the victim’s family and the community. The Sarasota Police Department asks for the public’s patience and respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time as we continue our investigation,” the department said. “We remain committed to finding answers and bringing justice to those affected by this tragic event.”
