MYAKKA CITY, FL — A portion of Myakka Road will close Wednesday at 2 p.m. because of “unsafe conditions,” according to a Sarasota County news release.

The emergency closure follows an engineering report that Sarasota County Public Works received Wednesday.

The report shows that three large pipe culverts under Myakka Road, .44 miles north of Clay Gully Road, are “deteriorated to a point they are no longer safe for vehicles traveling on the road,” the county said.

The culvert crossing consists of three corrugated steel plate pipes with each pipe having a measured span length of about 12 feet. A visual inspection of the culvert by engineers showed “severe structural deterioration,” the county said.

Myakka Road will be closed over the pipe culvert crossing between Hancock Road and Clay Gully Road for at least two weeks because of these conditions.
