FL Man With History Of Sexual Offenses Sentenced For Sexual Battery

A man who previously impregnated 2 girls under 16 was sentenced to prison for 2 new sexual battery crimes in Sarasota, state attorney said.

SARASOTA, FL — A man with a history of convictions for sexually motivated offenses was sentenced Thursday to 50 years in prison after being convicted of two counts of sexual battery in Sarasota, State Attorney Ed Brodsky’s office said in a news release.

Calvin Deleon Turner’s sentencing came about two months after a three-day trial at the Sarasota County Courthouse on Sept. 24-26.

Turner committed the crimes, which were investigated by the Sarasota Police Department, when the victim was at his home.

Investigators learned that in several instances in his past, Turner forced himself upon other women in the Sarasota and Bradenton area, but these incidents were rarely reported, the state attorney’s office said.

During the trial, one witness came forward and described how Turner committed a similar offense against her in the late 1990s, Brodsky’s office said.

After he was found guilty at the trial, the jury also found that he qualified as a “Dangerous Sexual Felony Offender” under Florida law. This imposed a mandatory minimum sentence of 50 years in prison for Turner and qualified him for a life prison sentence.

Brodsky’s office asked the judge for the maximum sentence of life in prison because of his previous state and federal convictions, including two prior convictions for impregnating a girl who was under 16.

“This defendant has shown absolutely no remorse for his years of abuse in the community.
While the sentence imposed was the minimum, it will protect the community for a
significant period,” assistant state attorney S. Ethan Dunn said. “The courage of the defendant’s victims to face their abuser and the excellent work of law enforcement, along with the jury’s well-reasoned verdict, helped to make this sentence possible.”
