FL Reports 966 More Coronavirus Cases As Gyms Reopen Around Miami

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported 12 new deaths and 966 new cases of the coronavirus Monday as gyms, karate classes, dance studios and similar businesses reopened around the Miami area.

Florida health officials also reported 66 new hospitalizations over the previous 24-hour period as Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said he would allow his county's beaches to reopen on Wednesday after being shut down since March to stem the spread of the new coronavirus.

Florida now has 64,904 confirmed coronavirus cases throughout the state, up from 63,938 a day earlier. The state's death toll rose to 2,712 from 2,700 deaths a day earlier.

A total of eight Florida counties reported 12 new deaths Monday compared to 12 new deaths on Sunday, 28 new deaths Saturday, 53 new deaths Friday, 42 new deaths on Thursday, 35 new deaths Wednesday, 71 new deaths Tuesday and seven last Monday.

Miami-Dade reported two deaths on Monday. Palm Beach County reported one new death. Broward County reported four new deaths.

Hamilton County reported its first death from the virus on Monday. Collier County reported one new death as did Duval County, Hillsborough County and Volusia County.

Miami-Dade reported 19,756 confirmed cases of the virus Monday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 7,924 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 7,329 cases.

Florida had a 5.3 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a total of 1,235,513 tests that had been administered as of Monday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 11,008 from 10,942 a day earlier.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 2,861 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 2,378 cases.
