Murder Charge Filed In North Jetty Park Shooting: Sheriff

A Port Charlotte man is charged with second-degree murder in a fatal shooting at North Jetty Park, Sarasota County Sheriff officials said.

SARASOTA, FL — A Port Charlotte man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a man he argued with at the North Jetty Park, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Franklin Roosevelt Raybon Jr., 22, of Port Charlotte, surrendered to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said in a news release that Raybon is the sole suspect in the shooting of Octavius Cornelius Lee Cummings Jr., 25, that occurred at the North Jetty Park in Nokomis Sunday evening.

A shooting was reported about 7:16 p.m. at North Jetty Park on Casey Key Road in Nokomis, where deputies found Cummings, of Port Charlotte, dead.

Investigators believe the shooting was the result of an altercation between the two men at the park, a news release said.

Raybon has been charged with second-degree murder and an additional charge of attempted felony murder for firing at another person near the victim. The second person was not struck by the gunshot.

Authorities said Raybon has been booked into the Sarasota County Correctional Facility.
