New Coronavirus Deaths In Florida Decline; 45,588 Confirmed Cases

The number of new coronavirus deaths in FL showed a decline Sunday as health officials reported 45,588​ confirmed cases of the virus.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of new coronavirus deaths in Florida showed a decline Sunday as Florida health officials reported a total of 45,588 confirmed cases of the virus, an increase of 777 more cases over the previous 24-hour period.

Six Florida counties reported a combined total of eight new deaths over the previous 24-hour period, which is significantly fewer than the 47 reported on Saturday and the 41 deaths reported Friday. The total number of deaths rose to 1,973 Sunday, up from 1,964 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade reported two new deaths. Broward County reported one more death.

Hillsborough County reported two new deaths. Desoto County reported one new death as did Duval County and Martin County.

Florida had a 7 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a. total of 653,081 tests that had been administered as of Sunday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 8,230 from 8,146 a day earlier.

A total of cases 26,425 — or some 58 percent of the state's total — were in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Palm Beach County businesses partially reopened on May 11 while Miami-Dade and Broward counties are set to partially reopen Monday. Some cities like Miami and Miami Beach have opted to open later.

Miami-Dade reported 15,658 confirmed cases of the virus as of Sunday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 6,243 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 4,524 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,614 cases as of Sunday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,655 cases.
