Parade, Flag Placement, 5K Hike: Sarasota-Area Memorial Day Events

SARASOTA-BRADENTON, FL — If you’re looking for a way to honor fallen heroes in Sarasota and Manatee counties this Memorial Day weekend, here are some of the events planned throughout the community:

10th Annual Sarasota Memorial Day Flag Placement

When: Saturday, 7:30 a.m.

Where: Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota

Families will place their loved one's flag at 7:50 a.m.; remaining flags will be placed beginning at 8 a.m.

SRQ Vets 10th Annual Memorial Day Hike

When: Saturday, 8 a.m.

Where: JD Hamel Park, 199 Bayfront Drive, Sarasota

This annual 5K hike honors fallen heroes.

Patriotic Pops: Salute to the Greatest Generation

When: Saturday, 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Where: Atlanta Braves at CoolToday Park, 18800 SW Villages Pkwy., Venice

This year’s event — “Salute To The Greatest Generation, A WWII Tribute” — will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, and feature WWII music, events, and a spectacular fireworks show.

Bradenton’s Annual Memorial Day Service

When: Monday, 9 a.m.

Where: Don Courtney Veterans’ Monument Park, 176 Waterfront Drive, Bradenton

The park is located on the Riverwalk behind Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton.

Memorial Day Patriotic Symphony Salute

When: Monday, 10 a.m.

Where: The Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria
The 90-minute program is free to attend and includes a flag presentation by the U.S. Marine Corps.

Memorial Day Parade

When: Monday, 10 a.m.

Where: The parade will start at Main Street and Osprey Avenue and conclude at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park, located at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue.

A ceremony with guest speaker Sonny Bywaters, who helped form the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee, will take place at 11 a.m. at J.D. Hamel Park.
