Phillippi Estate to Host Family-Friendly Archaeology Event

The Sarasota County park will turn back the clock to 500 B.C. this weekend.

Sarasota, FL – Visitors to the Phillippi Estate will travel back in time to 500 B.C. when they visit the park for a free archaeology event from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 25.

The event will take place at the Edson Keith Mansion on the grounds of Phillippi Estate Park, 5500 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.

The family-friendly event will showcase what the property likely looked like between the years 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. Visitors to the event will get an opportunity to see how the results of January 2016 excavations at the park are analyzed and interpreted. Archaeologists and other experts will be on hand site to speak with visitors as well.

Visitors can also learn about artifacts used by the Manasota Indians who lived by Phillippi Creek about 2,500 to 1,500 years ago. Hands-on demonstrations will feature atlatls, which are tools used to increase velocity when throwing a dart or spear.

The archaeology event is part of a year-long 100th anniversary celebration for the Edson Keith Mansion. The park will host a centennial commemoration in November.
