UPDATE: Police Find Missing Boy in North Sarasota

Sarasota Police charged an Alabama man with assaulting his girlfriend and abducting her child. The suspect was found late Friday, and the child and mother were reunited.

UPDATE:

An Alabama man is in custody, accused of kidnapping his girlfriend's son and hiding from police.

Officers responded at 7:45 a.m. Friday to a motel in the 1800 block of North Tamiami Trail for a domestic assault situation.

When officers arrived, they found that the female victim had multiple contusions and bruises from the incident, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

Police say the woman and boyfriend, Robert Barrett, 29, of Eden, Ala., had recently arrived in Sarasota, looking for a new beginning and a place to work and live.

Barrett had fled on foot just prior to police arrival, and had taken the victim’s 3-year-old son with him. Barrett is not the child's father, police said. 

Detectives said that they determined that the situation was a kidnapping and were able to contact Barrett via cell phone, but he refused to return the child, police said. 

Barrett told police he would never be found and that he wasn’t going to jail, police said.

At approximately 3:15 pm., with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal's Service Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force - Tampa, and Sarasota County Sheriff Air Support, Sarasota officers and detectives found the suspect and recovered the missing child. 

The suspect was found hiding just north of the location where the child had been abducted. 

Barrett was located and taken into custody without incident and is being charged with aggravated battery/domestic violence, child neglect and kidnapping, police said.

Detectives are still interviewing Barrett and say there may be additional charges and warrants pending from out of state.

The child and the mother were transported to to be medically cleared.The child was not harmed.

EARLIER: Sarasota Police are scouring the Indian Beach neighborhood area today, searching for a missing 3-year-old boy.

Neighbors said they learned in an automated call from police that authorities are looking for a child whose last name is Barrett. He has blond hair and blue eyes. He has been missing since 8 a.m. from 1803 N. Tamiami Trail.

It is unclear in the call if the first name is Ace or Alex.

The call said he is most likely with his father Rob Barrett, 27, who has brown curly hair, blue eyes, gray T-shirt, green jacket, blue jeans or khaki pants.

An increased police presence was noticeable Friday afternoon in that area of North Sarasota, and a K-9 unit was parked off of Indian Beach Drive.

The police department has not returned messages seeking comment about the search.

When approached by a reporter, one officer offered no comment and said "Nothing you need to know about right now."
