Police: Man Fired Assault Rifle in Dispute Over a Woman

Jacobe Jenkins is accused of opening fire Wednesday outside a Sarasota home; his sister, who police say drove him there with her toddler in the car, was arrested and charged.

Police are looking for a man who they say fired an assault rifle at another man in a Sarasota neighborhood following a dispute over a woman.

Jacobe Jenkins is accused of opening fire outside a home in the 1800 block of 24th Street around 10:22 a.m. Wednesday.

Sarasota Police say Jenkins pulled up to the home with his sister, Jasmine Jenkins, who was driving a green Dodge Magnum. Jasmine Jenkins, who police said also had her toddler in the car during the incident, was later arrested.

According to the victim, Jacobe Jenkins got out of the car and fired several rounds at him as he was standing in the driveway with his brother. The victim was not shot, police said, but suffered an injury trying to run from the gunfire.

Bullet casings were recovered at the scene, and gunshot damage was found on two duplexes in the neighborhood, officials said.

The victim told detectives he has had "several verbal confrontations with Jacobe Jenkins over a woman" and was verbally threatened by him earlier in the day, when he was in the same green Dodge Magnum, Officer Linda DeNiro, police spokesperson, said in an email.

Jasmine Jenkins was arrested later that afternoon at her Gore Court home and taken into custody for questioning, police said. She was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and child neglect and was being held at Sarasota County Jail.

There is an active warrant for Jacobe Jenkins for aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Jenkins, described as a black male, 5-foot-5 with black hair and brown eyes, is considered armed and dangerous, police said.
