Sarasota to Charge New Solid Waste Fees
The new solid waste fee schedule goes into effect October 1.

From the City of Sarasota:
SARASOTA, FL - After maintaining solid waste fees at the same rate for the past ten years, new rates for residential and commercial customers will begin Saturday, October 1, 2016 with a modest increase and no change to the current level of service.
Curbside residential rates will increase $1 on customers’ monthly utility bill. The current $21.66 fee will become $22.66.

Commercial rates will vary depending upon the container size and frequency of collection. The fee for commercial customers with a residential-size cart picked up twice a week will be $30.89. The tonnage collected from commercial customers and disposed at the landfill is double that of residential customers. The new rates were adjusted to reflect that higher level of service.
Over the past decade, the Solid Waste Division maintained the same reasonable rates due to technology efficiencies in the industry, and favorable contracts with Waste Management for commercial and recycling collection services. The modest fee increases are necessary due to increased hotel and multi-family residential construction which has required additional commercial collection staff, reduced recycling revenue, and the need to be fiscally responsible by maintaining a healthy operating reserve.
