Sarasota County School Board Agrees To Raise Superintendent's Pay

Superintendent Dr. Brennen Asplen has been employed with Sarasota County Schools since Aug. 10, 2020.

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — The Sarasota County School Board gave the green light Tuesday during a workshop meeting to raise the salary of its current superintendent, Dr. Brennen Asplen.

Asplen has been employed with Sarasota County Schools since Aug. 10, 2020. The new proposed contract would extend his employment through June 30, 2025.

Under the contract, Asplen would see a 3 percent raise to his current $227,000 salary; however, other increases are possible.

"The Board may, at its sole discretion, grant additional pay increases at any time due to the Board's assessment of current conditions or any other factors bearing on the Superintendent's performance and compensation," a portion of the contract reads.

Also, instead of providing Asplen with a vehicle, the board would agree to provide him with $900 a month to offset his personal expenses, such as gas, vehicle maintenance, etc, according to the contract.

The contract does not offer Asplen any protections if the board at any point chooses to fire him.

At least four board members would have to vote in favor of termination. Asplen would have to also receive at least 30 days advance written notice of the board's intent to let him go without cause.

"Superintendent expressly waives any right he might otherwise have to object to the reasons of this termination," the contract reads.

Tuesday's workshop meeting:

The school board will formally vote to approve Asplen's new contract at its regular meeting on June 21.
