Sarasota Family: UCF Student Gunman Was Not Violent

The Sarasota family of James Oliver Seevakumaran issued a public statement today, following the suicide of the student gunman who had plotted a attack on University of Central Florida.

Family members described Seevakumaran as a "loner" who had no history of violence.

Officials at the University of Central Florida said that Seevakumaran had an arsenal of weapons and planned to carry out an act of violence against the school. Instead, he turned the gun on himself as police were entering his dormitory, the Huffington Post reports. Police were tipped off to problems, when a roommate saw Seevakumaran with a gun and called 911.

Statement on Behalf of Family of James Oliver Seevakumaran

"The family of James Oliver Seevakumaran states that James was a loner and did not have a history of violence.  The family does not wish to make any further comments to the media, and they are requesting privacy during this difficult time."  

The family is directing all inquiries to the University of Central Florida Police Department.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office relayed the family's public statement, but also made it clear that it is not part of the investigation.
