Sarasota Schools Cancel After-School Events

Based on a severe weather threat, Sarasota County Schools has canceled all after-school events scheduled to take place on Thursday.

SARASOTA, FL — Based on a severe weather threat, Sarasota County Schools has canceled all after-school events, extracurricular activities and field trips scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20. After-care child care will be provided as usual.

"We are asking our school communities, staff and parents to be extra watchful during arrival and dismissal on campus tomorrow, as the forecast could change suddenly," district officials said on Wednesday afternoon. "The district will continue to monitor the weather and send out additional updates to our school communities as needed."

The National Weather Service has announced the potential for severe thunderstorms with the possibility of 2 to 3 inches of rain, hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Showers and storms will begin to affect the area Wednesday night, with the main line of storms expected to move through the area on Thursday. Showers and cloudiness will linger through Friday, according to district officials.
