Sarasota's Nik Wallenda Set For Grand Canyon Walk

The high wire artist will attempt his most daring feat yet in a live televised event Sunday.

With his practice sessions in Sarasota behind him, daredevil Nik Wallenda is now ready for the real thing: a walk across the Grand Canyon.

The high-wire artist from Sarasota's famous Wallenda family wrapped up his training earlier this week at Nathan Benderson Park. Patch reader Mike Hassel posted this photo gallery of one of Wallenda's recent public sessions as he prepped for his most ambitious stunt yet.

Wallenda will cross over the Little Colorado River Gorge at a height of 1,500 feet in a live televised event Sunday, June 23. "Skywire Live With Nik Wallenda" will air at 8 p.m. on Discovery.

It won't be his first attempt at a fantastic feat. Last year, Wallenda became the first person to cross Niagara Falls on a wire. The stunt was shown live on ABC.

Wallenda followed that up in January by walking over U.S. 41 in downtown Sarasota, crossing the highway 200 feet in the air.

"I truly love this city and anything I can do to shine an international spotlight and attract more visitors, I'm more than willing to do," he told Patch at the time.

For his efforts to promote his hometown, Wallenda was honored last month with the "Voice of Sarasota" award by Visit Sarasota County.
