SPD: Arrive Early At Grand Prix Super Boat Race Or Stay Home

Sarasota Police Department is warning Grand Prix Super Boat fans to expect heavily congested traffic, road closures and partial beach closures on Lido Key.

The message from Sarasota Police Department is simple about viewing the Grand Prix Super Boat races: arrive early or stay home.

And if you don't, expect plenty of headaches.

Tropical Storm Debby is still leaving lingering effects on Lido Key and Lido Beach that will serve as problematic for both getting to, parking at and viewing the event for some. The race has two heats at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Most notably, the severe beach erosion along the beaches has decreased the spectator viewing area, according to the police. In some areas, that leaves a narrow line for spectators to set up as part of the beach is roped off to allow ATVs and emergency vehicles to access the beach safely.

One area that's significantly damaged, according to the SPD, is the front of the Lido Beach Pavilion becah area.

Instead of viewing the races there, head north of the pavilion, the police advise, or "consider forgoing this year's event."

Once you get into the water, it might not be comfortable either as rocks that were once buried on the surf line and are now exposed. Police advise against diving in shallow water. Additionally, because of the unstable sand now present, rip currents have been more common in the Gulf and lifeguards are advising swimmers to exercise caution.

On The Road

Getting in and out of Lido Key and St. Armand's Circle will also be problematic, police said. Delays could last more than an hour, so police say arrive early and leave late.

Parking will be "significantly reduced," police said, as standing storm water in the South Boulevard of the Presidents median and ongoing road construction is taking a chunk out of spaces.

South Boulevard of the Presidents at Cleveland and South Washington drives is closed to northbound traffic because of a water pipe replacement.

To help drivers navigate, 20 additional officers will be on traffic duty after the race to get people off the Keys, while four additional deputies will do the same at Ted Sperling Park, which used to be called .

Thinking about improvising your parking by parking illegally or blocking a driveway? Don't chance it. You will be ticketed or towed.

Crushing cans on the beach while watching the race? Get a designated driver. Officers and deputies will be on high alert for DUI drivers.
