SPEAK OUT: How Are You Feeling About City Hall?

Would you reelect your city commissioners or change the structure of the government?

Sarasota is going through quite the transformation and some would argue an identity crises.

Each commissioner seems to have an idea about how the government should function and be composed essentially blaming the structure of municipal government for problems.

How do you feel about the City Commission's handling of these issues? Would you reelect each city commissioner as it stands now?

Is it the system problem or a people problem? In 2011, voters brought in newcomers Shannon Snyder, Paul Caragiulo and Willie Shaw, though only one incumbent ran in those district races.

The commission believes there is a systemic issue. Mayor Suzanne Atwell sided with an elected mayor initiative, but focused her comments on how the current commission-manager form is faring.

"We as a city continue year after year after year having serial leadership," Atwell said. "Every potent issue that comes along, we see a leader who emerges from that issue temporarily. ... But when we continue to have a separate but equal mentality, we foster separate but fragmented leadership."

How did you think commissioners handled these issues?

The next city commission election is March 12, 2013, for commissioners Suzanne Atwell and Terry Turner — both citywide seats. So far, Richard Dorfman and the Rev. Kelvin Lumpkin filed to run for these seats.

Commissioners Willie Shaw (District 1), Paul Caragiulo (District 2) and Shannon Snyder (District 3) are up for election on March 10, 2015.
