Speed A Factor In Fatal FL Crash, Troopers Say

A passenger was killed after a speeding sports car lost control and hit a tree in Sarasota, FL Highway Patrol said.

SARASOTA, FL — A passenger was killed after a speeding sports car lost control and hit a tree in Sarasota early Saturday, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

A BMW 328I heading west on Northgate Boulevard near Independence Boulevard was speeding when the driver, a 21-year-old Bradenton man, lost control around 2:45 a.m.

The car rotated 90 degrees, moving into the opposite side of the road, FHP said.

It drove over a curb and hit a tree, causing the car to rotate 180 degrees. It came to a stop facing east in the middle of the road.

The rear passenger, a 21-year-old Bradenton man, was pronounced dead at the scene, FHP said.

The driver and another passenger, also a 21-year-old Bradenton man, suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
