The Day After Debby In Sarasota

Sarasota County continues to sift through the damage Wednesday after Debby made a dent in area beaches and roads.

Updated 5:14 p.m.

Sarasota is continuing to clean up Wednesday after Tropical Storm Debby finally left Florida.

The beaches have taken the biggest hit. Roads are flooded throughout Siesta Key, dunes are damaged and even decks to access the beach are damaged in some places.

• The worst erosion took place from the Sarasota/Charlotte county line to Blind Pass Park (mid-beach).

• Approximately 50 feet of dune was estimated to be eroded away at Blind Pass Park.

• Substantial loss of dune vegetation and many trees toppled.

• Structural damage to decks and dune walkovers.

• Some dune walkover structures were completely washed out.

• At least three residential structures are threatened, sitting at the edge of the new eroded bluff line.

• A step seawall was undermined by wave action.

• A portion of Manasota Key Road at the north end of the Blind Pass Park was threatened by dune erosion. The bluff has been eroded all the way to the edge of that portion of the road (about 200-300 feet long).

At Marina Jack and Sarasota Bayfront Park, folks checked on their boats and retrieved their vessels that ran aground, and a crane sat by the Marina helping with clean-up efforts.

The Steigerwaldt-Jockey Children’s Fountain, located within Bayfront Park, is now open following clean up and debris removal due to Tropical Storm Debby.  The fountain will be open until 7 p.m., according to the City of Sarasota.

Richardson Road, west of Coburn Road, in Sarasota is still closed after water rushing underneath the road forced a collapse thanks to a clogged culvert.

Here are other road closures from Sarasota County Government:

• North Beach Road to Columbus Avenue (Siesta Key Village).

• Per order of the U.S. Coast Guard, movable bridges remain locked down to allow vehicular traffic to pass. Vessel traffic is limited. Bridges will not open unless a vessel is in distress.
