Thunderstorms, Rip Currents, Flooding Forecasted Through Thursday

A low pressure system is expected to bring stormy weather to Sarasota and southwest Florida.

Widely scattered thunderstorms and up to five inches of rain are in the forecast for Sarasota, as a low-pressure system settles in the region.

Rip currents are a concern along the beaches. Cloud-to-ground lightning pose a risk, as thunderstorms are predicted to sweep across southwest Florida  Wednesday afternoon. Rains and wind gusts could increase overnight.

A small craft advisory and flood watch are in effect through Thursday, with minor flooding expected in some coastal areas.

“A copious amount of moisture will be moving into the region,” said John McMichael, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

McMichael said that 3 to 5 inches of rain are anticipated in the next 48 hours and there’s ”an increasing risk for tornadoes and water spouts later this afternoon (Wednesday) and Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, "this system has the potential to bring multiple hazards to the region this week."
