SARASOTA, FL — State Sen. Joe Gruters (R-Sarasota) wants to rename a portion of U.S. 41/Tamiami Trail as the Gulf of America Trail, according to a bill he submitted for consideration during the upcoming legislative session.

His proposed Senate Bill 1058 calls for designating the section of the highway between State Road 60 and U.S. 1 in Miami-Dade, Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee and Hillsborough counties the Gulf of America Trail.

It would go into effect July 1 if it passes and is signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The move would be in line with the recent federal name change of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America that went into effect after a January executive order from President Donald Trump.

Gruter’s bill also calls for each Florida agency to update its geographic materials to reflect this change.

It would also require each school district in the state to refer to the body of water as the Gulf of America in all instructional materials and library media center collections.

Rep. Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) recently filed a similar bill.
