Valrico Man Killed in Sarasota Fuel Tanker Crash

Breaking: A tanker carrying about 8,500 gallons of fuel crashed on I-75 Friday night killing the driver.

SARASOTA, FL — A 68-year-old Valrico man is dead following a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 75 Friday night.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, George Ervin was headed south on I-75 near Sumter Boulevard around 10:45 p.m. Sept. 23 in a tanker carrying about 8,500 gallons of fuel. For unknown reasons, the truck drifted between the left and right lanes. Troopers say Ervin lost control.

The truck, the patrol said, overturned, killing Ervin.

The crash closed north and southbound lanes in the area well into Saturday morning. As of late Saturday morning, the southbound lanes of I-75 remained closed between Sumter Boulevard and Toledo Blade for necessary cleanup.
