Weekend Things: Greek Glendi Festival Opens

1. The 28th annual Greek Glendi opens today at 11 a.m. at St. Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church on the corner of Lockwood Ridge Road and Tellevast Road. Don't miss the fabulous food, music and dancing. There is also a play area for children and church tours for those interested in art and architecture

2. Head up to Mixon Fruit Farms with its annual Valentine Chocolate Eating Contest beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Contestants have to be fast: unwrap and eat the most candy Kisses and you could win a gift basket loaded for romance. It includes a bottle of wine, two wine glasses, a box of fudge, sweet nuts, kettle korn and Murcott tangerines.

3. Go see the story of tango at 8 p.m. Thursday. Forever Tango features world-class tango dancers, a vocalist and an on-stage orchestra (including the instrument of the tango, the bandoneon) in an evening that celebrates the story of the birth of the tango in 19th century Argentina where thousands of men, having abandoned a disintegrating Europe to emigrate to South America, found themselves in the crowded abattoirs (packing houses), the bars and street corners of the arrabales (outlying barrios) and in the enramadas (brothels). Tickets cost $30 to $55.

4. Jill Sobule comes to the Mertz Theatre at  on Monday. Ok so this is a Monday, but the weekend can last one more day for a concert with Sobule. She's the composer of new music featured in the theatre's production of Yentl. You remember Sobule for her 1990s hits "I Kissed a Girl" and"Supermodel" from the movie Clueless. Tickets for Sobule's show start at $17. For that matter, check out Yentl. There are still a few tickets left for today's 8 p.m. show. Tickets start at $31. The play contains mature themes and nudity.

5. Check out Bello Mania this weekend now that . Bello's  show Bello Mania starts Friday at the Big Top and tickets are on sale now. There's a special on opening weekend tickets now for certain seats priced $10 and $20.
