Here are the top five stories in Tampa today:
1. Florida grew by 211,196 residents from July 1st, 2020, to July 1st, 2021, to a population of 21,781,128, U.S. Census estimates show. The only state to grow by more people was Texas. Economists currently predict average growth of 309,867 new Florida residents per year through 2026. (Orlando Weekly)
2. A Palm Harbor woman is dead after a fire at a Circle K gas station on East Lake Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The fire was caused by a 66-year-old woman backing into a gas pump, crushing another woman who was pumping gas and causing an explosion. The incident is under investigation. (WFLA)
3. A 25-year-old Apopka man was arrested when he showed up to retrieve his car abandoned after a fatal hit-and-run crash. Christopher Xavier Cardenas Alvelo has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. (Tampa Patch)
4. The NFL announced five Tampa Bay Buccaneers players have been named to the 2022 Pro Bowl. The list includes linebacker Shaquil Barrett, center Ryan Jensen, guard Ali Marpet, tackle Tristan Wirfs and quarterback Tom Brady. (WTSP)
5. Two national wellness retailers have been announced by Strategic Property Partners for Sparkman Wharf in the growing Water Street Tampa neighborhood: BODYROK and The Covery. Both retailers are expected to open in 2022. (That's So Tampa)
