Construction Equipment Driver Falls To Death At Tampa Airport

A construction equipment operator died while working on a shuttle renovation project at Tampa International Airport, officials said.

TAMPA, FL — A construction equipment operator died in a Wednesday morning accident at the Tampa International Airport. The accident happened just after 7:30 a.m.

The worker was working as part of the Airside A shuttle guideway renovation project, Tampa International Airport Police said in a news release.

Airport officials told WFLA that construction equipment fell off the shuttle track with the operator inside.

Flight operations weren’t affected Wednesday and passengers who were picked up at Blue Arrivals were rerouted to the Blue Express lanes for several hours during the investigation.

“We are heartbroken about the passing of one of our construction workers,” TPA CEO Joe Lopano said. “We share our deepest condolences with his loved ones. Tampa International Airport is conducting a comprehensive investigation into this accident.”

All work on the project has been paused for a safety review by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, which operates TPA, Fox 13 reported.
