Here are the top stories today in Tampa:
- Tampa Water Department is participating in a pilot program for a new technology that aims to reduce blue-green algae growth. The technology uses ultrasonic sound waves to block algae's access to sunlight and nutrients, essentially killing the algae. The new technology is being tested in the Hillsborough River. (Tampa Patch)
- Dave’s Hot Chicken is opening on Tampa on Friday, June 16 near the University area at 2540 E Fowler Ave. The fried chicken restaurant concept will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Dave's Hot Chicken is open in 22 states throughout the U.S.A. (That's So Tampa)
- Tampa homes rose in value to an average of $370,792 in May 2022, according to the Zillow Home Value Index. The growth was slightly slower than the rest of the country. The average monthly mortgage payment in Tampa has reached $1,923, which is now higher than the national average. (ABC Action News)
- The Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Pinellas County has reported the loss of its 4-year-old Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, Apollo. The dolphin was found stranded in Playalinda, Florida back in 2021 and taken into the care of the aquarium. Apollo was suffering from hearing loss which impaired the dolphin from going back into the wild. (WFLA)
- University of South Florida (USF) professor and researcher, Dr. Joseph Dituri, surfaced after spending 100 days living underwater last Friday. Dituri set the world record for days living underwater last month. The researcher was seeking more information on hyperbaric oxygen therapy. (Tampa Patch)
