FL Gas Tax Holiday Runs Through Oct. 31

Floridians can fill up their tanks at a discounted price as the state's 25 cents a gallon gas tax is suspended until Oct. 31.

FLORIDA — Floridians can fill up their tanks at a discounted price throughout this month as the state’s Florida Motor Fuel Tax Relief Act of 2022 gets underway.

This holiday suspends the state’s 25.3-cent tax on each gallon of gasoline through Oct. 31.

Passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the tax rate reduction applies to all gasoline products, any product blended with gasoline and any fuel placed in the storage supply tank of a gasoline-powered motor vehicle.

Unlike sales tax, which is assessed on the taxable price of goods and services, fuel taxes are assessed on gallons when the product is removed from a terminal or imported into Florida. These taxes are remitted to the state by licensed terminal suppliers and importers who then pass the fuel taxes down through the supply chain to the ultimate consumer at the pump.

Under Florida law, all segments of the petroleum industry must pass along the reduced tax rate, so the consumer receives the full benefit of the tax suspension.

On Sunday, the state average for gasoline was $3.26 per gallon. That’s the lowest daily average price since January.

So far, the state average price for gasoline declined 13 cents per gallon since the gas tax holiday began. Before October, the state average declined a total of $1.50 per gallon since prices reached their peak of $4.89 per gallon in mid-June.

"This gas tax builds on the previous downward pressure on pump prices, stemming from global recession concerns and underwhelming fuel demand," said Mark Jenkins, a spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Prices are now beginning to dip below $3 a gallon at various gas stations in the state. While everyone might not be so lucky to see sub-$3 gasoline, all Floridians should expect a sizeable discount this week."

  • Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.
  • Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
