Here's How FL Grocery Costs Rank Nationally

A new study by Food Label Maker showed Florida has experienced a 22.15 percent change in grocery costs in the last two years.

FLORIDA — Amid nationwide inflation, a new study found groceries in Florida are among some of the most costly.

According to Food Label Maker, which performs nutrition analysis, Florida is 40th among states with the most affordable groceries. The Sunshine State's grocery price index surpasses the 1oo-point average with 105.4.

Florida has experienced a 22.15 percent change in the last two years, Food Label Maker reported. In 2022, its GPI was 132.

Residents may be shocked to learn the average grocery price per person was $364.25 in 2024 in Florida.

Regionally, the South has felt pressure from inflation in the last few years. In its October 2024 report, Consumer Affairs reported that 31 percent of Americans were able to keep up with increased costs of important goods and services, including groceries.

The monthly grocery bill was $1,248 in 2023 in Florida, according to the Consumer Affairs report. Fourteen percent of the $8,636 monthly income was spent on groceries, the study found.

How does Florida rank with other states?

According to Food Label Maker, Florida falls in line with Delaware and New Hampshire for grocery prices.

No other states topped Texas, where groceries are the most affordable and are 9.7 percent below the national average. On the other end of the grocery cart, Hawaii is the least affordable.

In the last couple of years, Michigan dropped nearly 1 percent in its grocery prices and is one of the most stable among the U.S. states, Food Label Maker reported. The Great Lakes state is second among the most affordable for groceries.

Though among the most expensive, groceries in Florida still cost less than in Vermont, New Jersey and New York.
