Hillsborough County Mosquito Control to Treat Tampa Area

From Hillsborough County: Hillsborough County Mosquito Control will treat areas of South Tampa and MacDill Air Force Base, Monday, February 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. by air. The product Anvil will be used to control adult mosquitoes on roughly 4,570 acres in South Tampa and 5,528 acres at MacDill Air Force Base. If weather or mechanical issues prevent this treatment Monday, the mission will be rescheduled for Tuesday, February 28, or Wednesday, March 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The boundaries of the South Tampa areas to be sprayed are:

North Boundary: West Gandy Boulevard
South Boundary: MacDill Air Force Base
East Boundary: Hillsborough Bay (body of water)
West Boundary: Picnic Island

The boundaries of MacDill Air Force Base to be sprayed are:

North Boundary: North Boundary Road
South Boundary: Flagpole Road
East Boundary: Bayshore Boulevard
West Boundary: West Boundary Road

The spraying will be done by a Bell Jet Ranger 206 helicopter at an altitude of 300 feet.

Stop Mosquitoes from Living and Multiplying Around Your Home

Residents may have standing water around their homes that can support the breeding of mosquitoes. Follow these tips from the Florida Department of Health to help prevent mosquito breeding:

• Drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots, buckets, watering cans, kiddie pools, and any other containers where rainwater has collected.
• Discard old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances, and other items that may collect water.
• Clean out rain gutters and downspouts regularly.
• Empty and clean birdbaths and pet water bowls at least once or twice a week.
• Protect boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that do not accumulate water.
• Keep swimming pools in good condition, and maintain chlorination.
