Here are the top five stories today in Tampa:

1. Hillsborough County still owes its taxpayers $521,183,433 for an extra one-cent sales tax to improve roads that was ruled unconstitutional in 2021. The county is sitting more than half a billion dollars. How to refund the money is being disputed and may have more clarity in 2022. (Fox 13 Tampa)

2. Rent crisis: Tampa City Council will consider instituting a “Tenant’s Bill of Rights" as rents skyrocket in the Tampa area. The city ordinance would require landlords to provide renters a list of their rights and helpful resources. It mirrors a similar ordinance in Hillsborough County. It would also prohibit landlords from discriminating against renters based on the source of their income, such as if income comes from Section 8 vouchers. (ABC Action News)

3. Free chicken: This Christmas Eve all three locations of local hot chicken joint King of the Coop are giving away tender boxes starting at 11 a.m. Each location will have 250 boxes ready for giveaway. (Creative Loafing Tampa)

4. Trulieve Cannabis has opened its eighth medical cannabis dispensary in Tampa on Tuesday at 7702 East Hillsborough Avenue near I-4 and I-75. Trulieve is Florida’s first and largest medical cannabis provider and operates in 11 states. (Florida Politics)

5. Are you looking for a last minute gift in Florida? Patch has a number of suggestions including Naples Soap Company, books by retired journalist Craig Pittman, Ybor City cigars, locally crafted spirits, and more. (Patch Florida)
