Major Retailer Closing 20 FL Locations

Nearly 400 stores of a major gaming retailer will soon shutter, with multiple locations in the city affected.

As of January, a list of around 390 GameStop stores was announced to have closed or will be closing later this month.

This includes 20 stores in Florida:

• Maplewood Plaza, 1158 N. University Drive, Coral Springs
• Gibbs Plaza, 1697 N. Woodland Blvd., Deland
• Gulf Coast Town Center, 10021 Gulf Center Drive, Fort Myers
• Home Depot S.C., 12001 Lem Turner Road, Jacksonville
• Lantana Plaza, 5780 Jog Road, Lake Worth
• 10300 US Hwy. 441, Leesburg
• Lakewood S.C., 5499 W. Atlantic Blvd., Margate
• Plantation Crossing, 1545 Branan Field Road, Middleburg
• 6751 N. Church Ave., Mulberry
• Market Center, 9960 Business Cir., Naples
• 8605 US Hwy. 19 N, New Port Richey
• Ocoee Commons, 10576 W. Colonial Drive, Ocoee
• Lake Fredrica S.C., 3916 S. Semoran Blvd., Orlando
• Palatka Center, 850 S. Moody Road, Palatka
• Seminole Center, 3715 S. Orlando Drive, Sanford
• Lakeshore Mall, 901 US Rt. 27 N, Sebring
• Walmart Outparcel, 11275 SE 178th Place, Summerfield
• Sawgrass Mills Mall, 12801 W. Sunrise Blvd., Sunrise
• Citrus Park S.C., 8506 Citrus Park Drive, Tampa

Florida locations that were open Friday were in Clearwater, Tampa, Pinellas Park and Largo.

This isn't the first time GameStop slashed a major number of its stores. In GameStop's December Securities and Exchange Commission filing, they stated they had already closed 590 stores in its fiscal 2024 year.

GameStop also noted they "anticipate closing a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025." The fiscal year ends on Jan. 31, 2026.

This is part of a "broad store portfolio optimization" due to market shifts toward digital gaming and "underperformance."

The strategy involves reducing the brick-and-mortar footprint while also exploring new revenue streams, according to the filings.
