TAMPA, FL — The suspect in a deadly Tampa shooting was arrested Tuesday night in Hillsborough County, authorities said.

Derrick Dempsey, 35, was charged with first-degree murder, according to a Tampa Police Department news release.

The fatal shooting happened Tuesday morning, around 5:45 a.m., at a home in the 1700 block of West Saint Joseph Street.

Officers responding to reports of gunshots heard coming from the home found the victim, a woman in her mid-30s, with a gunshot wound, police said. She was brought to a nearby hospital where she died from her injuries.

Witnesses told police that Dempsey was arguing with a woman he knew inside a pickup truck. The witnesses said that he got out of the truck, hit the victim and retrieved a gun before they heard a gunshot.

Dempsey was arrested without incident with help from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The shotgun was also found at the time of his arrest.

"This dangerous and calloused criminal showed no regard for human life, but thanks to the strong partnership between the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Tampa Police Department, we were able to bring this individual into custody," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "We are proud to provide the assistance and assets needed to support our partners in keeping our community safe."
