Here are the top stories in Tampa today:
- A three-fire alarm broke out at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay hotel on Friday. The hotel is located at 2900 Bayport Drive in Tampa. Nine people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries in the incident. An investigation is underway to the cause of the fire. (Tampa Patch)
- Disney's Tampa call center is celebrating over 25 years of operation in the area. Over 600 Disney employees or cast members answer calls, chats, and emails from thousands of guests at the center. To celebrate, City of Tampa Mayor Jane Castor declared May 11, 2023, “Celebrate Disney Cast Members Day” through a city proclamation. (Attractions Magazine)
- A 17-year-old migrant boy from Honduras died this week while he was in U.S. government custody at a shelter in Safety Harbor just outside of Tampa. The Honduran secretary of foreign affairs has called for an investigation into the incident. The cause of death has not been released by authorities. (Tampa Patch)
- An investigation is underway by police after a double shooting on Friday at an assisted living facility in Citrus County. Police said the suspect shot a woman outside the facility and then shot himself. Both people involved died at the scene. (WFLA)
- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is being sued by teachers' unions in Florida, including those in Tampa Bay, after they said the Florida state government targeted their union with a new law that reshapes how unions operate including a new ban on automatic union collections and opens unions to new investigations from the state. Notably, police and firefighter unions were exempted from the new law. (Fox 13)
