New Weatherization Program To Serve Polk, Hillsborough Counties

BROOKSVILLE, FL — Effective Dec. 1, Mid Florida Community Services Inc. will begin temporarily operating the Weatherization Assistance Program in Hillsborough and Polk counties until further notice.

"We are excited about the opportunity to expand our territory in regard to weatherizing homes. We will do everything in our power to ensure a seamless transition and to minimize service interruptions for existing clients to the greatest extent possible," said Mid Florida Communications Services CEO Mat Kline.

Mid Florida Communications Services currently operates the Weatherization Assistance Program in Hernando, Citrus, Pasco, Sumter and Volusia counties.

"The Tampa-Hillsborough Action Plan is working in partnership with Mid Florida Community Services for a successful transition of the program to ensure Hillsborough and Polk county residents in need of weatherization services are served," said THAP Interim President Curtis Stokes.

The program completes minor home repairs for low-income households to reduce the household's monthly energy burden by increasing the home's energy efficiency. Types of home repairs include addressing air infiltration with weather stripping, caulking, thresholds and replacing windows and doors; insulating attics and floors; and repairing or replacing heating and cooling units, and water heaters.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity provides funding to local agencies statewide to administer the Weatherization Assistance Program. DEO works with the local agencies that are awarded the grant to ensure the program is efficiently operated and serves residents of the state.

All current applications, including the applicants on the waiting list for services, have been transferred to Mid Florida Community Services. MFCS will contact applicants regarding their application and timeline for weatherization assistance.
