Pilot Safe After Peter O. Knight Plane Crash

A plane crashed into the water at Davis Islands' Peter O. Knight Airport Sunday afternoon.

TAMPA, FL — The Tampa Police Department and Fire Rescue crews responded to a Sunday afternoon plane crash at Tampa's Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Islands.

According to the police department, a Piper 28/140 lost power after taking off and landed in the water.

"The pilot, who was the sole occupant, exited the plane uninjured before the plane submerged," an email from the agency said.

Police marine units and divers are on the way to assist in recovering the plane, the agency noted in its March 12 email. The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct an investigation into the crash.

No further information is being released at this time.
