Rundown Apartment Complex Transformed Into Affordable East Tampa Homes

Hillsborough County and East Tampa Business and Civic Association officials will dedicate Friendship Village Thursday.

TAMPA, FL — Hillsborough County and East Tampa Business and Civic Association officials will dedicate a formerly rundown 13-unit apartment complex that has been rehabilitated specifically to house working, low-income families on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m.

Friendship Village, 1201 E. 127th Ave., Tampa, offers 11 two-bedroom apartments and two one-bedroom units. Rehabilitation work on the apartment complex included new roofs and HVAC systems, upgraded flooring, accessibility improvements, and new fencing.

All apartments will be rented to those making 80 percent or less of the area median income.

The ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony will feature officials from Hillsborough County and the East Tampa Business and Civic Association.

Hillsborough County provided $1.1 million in Community Development Block Grants and nearly $900,000 in state Housing Initiatives Partnership funding to the project.

Hillsborough County has prioritized addressing affordable housing issues, investing more than $54 million into the community in 2021, directly impacting more than 24,300 households. The programs and services funded by the county focus on creating new affordable housing opportunities, training for residents to further their careers to afford homes, and infrastructure improvements that enhance the communities around them.

The East Tampa Business and Civic Association is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to develop a healthy business and community climate to stimulate opportunities and improved living conditions for children, families and seniors in the East Tampa.
