‘Stolen? It’s A Rental Bro’: FL Man Driving Stolen Rental Car Arrested

TAMPA, FL — A driver who didn’t return his friend’s rental car - despite telling the friend he had done so four days earlier - was arrested Monday evening in Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post. (Watch deputy-worn body camera footage from the arrest below.)

David Hollis, 32, was charged with grand theft motor vehicle, no valid driver’s license and possession of cannabis.

With help from the Aviation Section, deputies were able to track the car to the 8400 block of Camden Street just before 6:30 p.m., HCSO said.

“What did I do, sir,” Hollis can be heard asking in the deputy’s bodycam footage.

“Stolen car, bro,” another deputy said.

“Stolen? It’s a rental bro,” Hollis said.

"Thanks to the fast response from our Aviation Section and ground units, we were able to return this stolen vehicle," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "Failing to return a rental car is theft - plain and simple. We will not tolerate that kind of criminal behavior in our community."
