Student Brought Gun To Tampa-Area High School, Hillsborough County Deputies Say
A 15-year-old was found with a semi-automatic gun on the campus of a Tampa-area high school, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
DOVER, FL — A 15-year-old boy at Strawberry Crest High School in Dover was arrested Monday for bringing a gun on school grounds, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
While HCSO has named the teen, it’s Patch policy to not name minors accused of a crime unless they’ve been charged as an adult. It’s not known if he’s been charged as a juvenile or an adult.
School administration spoke with the ninth-grader at 9:30 a.m. after being told that he might have had vape pens on campus.

During an administrative search of his backpack, administrators discovered a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, the sheriff’s office said. The gun wasn’t loaded and the teen didn’t have any ammunition.
When confronted, he tried to run from school administrators and pushed two of them to the ground, injuring them, in the process, HCSO said.

The teen was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, minor in possession of a firearm, and two counts of battery on a specified official or employee.
There were no direct threats made to students or staff at Strawberry Crest High School.
“There is absolutely no excuse for bringing a firearm onto a school campus,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “This kind of reckless behavior will never be tolerated. Every student and staff member deserves to feel safe at school, and we will continue to hold anyone fully accountable who jeopardizes that safety.”
