Here are the top stories today in Tampa:
1. Gasparilla Music Festival has announced that it will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination to attend the event or a negative COVID-19 test. The announcement comes after giant Live Nation made a similar move for upcoming concerts. The festival will be held October 1st to October 3rd at Curtis Hixon Park. (Creative Loafing Tampa)
2. A Lutz couple where Tim Burton’s classic “Edward Scissorhands” was filmed is opening their home as a museum with screenings for small groups to come when cooler weather arrives. They are collecting paintings and Johnny Depp autographs to expand the museum. (WFLA)
3. As Labor Day 2021 approached, Florida was ranked 24th in the nation for unemployment, according to WalletHub. Florida's unemployment rate is 5.1%, down from the nationwide rate of 5.4%. There are currently 545,000 jobs posted online in Florida. The labor force in Florida was up 83,000 over the month, bringing the July 2021 total up to 10,479,000. (Tampa Patch)
4. Clearwater High School is naming its football field after longtime athletic director Katherine Biddle who is battling stage-four breast cancer. She has taught at the school since 1978 and is the first woman to have a football field named after her. (Fox 13 Tampa)
5. A health advisory has been issued for Bahia, Ben T. Davis, Davis Islands, Cypress Point, E.G. Simmons and Picnic Island beaches due to high bacteria levels. The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County made the announcement on Thursday. Swimming in those locations is not recommended, due to high levels of enterococci bacteria. (Bay News 9)
