HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — A Tampa doctor was arrested for a fatal hit-and-run crash that left a man in a wheelchair dead last month, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Dr. Gwyn Normal Crump, Jr., 62, hit the victim on East 124th Avenue on Oct. 12, just after 7:30 p.m., and failed to stop.

Several witnesses to the hit-and-run gave a description of the vehicle to investigators.

The victim, 53-year-old Richard Taylor, was brought to AdventHealth Fletcher, where he died from his injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

Using HCSO's Real Time Crime Center cameras, detectives were able to identify Crump’s vehicle and tag. They went to his home, where he admitted to driving the vehicle the night of the crash.

Crump was arrested on Wednesday and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with death.

"I want to offer my deepest condolences to the family of the victim during this incredibly difficult time," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "While nothing can undo this heartbreaking loss, we hope that this arrest brings some measure of closure to their loved ones."
