Tampa Purchases 7 Acres, Seeks Bids For Affordable Housing

A Request for Proposal has been released for a 7-acre property at the northeast corner of 47th Street and Schipman Court in East Tampa.

TAMPA, FL — The city of Tampa announced another step in its effort to provide more affordable housing across all communities.

A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been released for a 7-acre property at the northeast corner of 47th Street and Schipman Court in East Tampa. As part of a multifaceted approach to addressing housing affordability, the city purchased the property with Community Development Block Grant funds.

The vision for this project is to add more than 150 income-qualifying housing units with a focus on walkability, community investment, resiliency, social cohesion and investment.

Located blocks away from East Hillsborough Avenue, future residents would have easy access from a main roadway and be in close proximity to transit, commerce and potential employment opportunities.

"As the housing market gets tighter, we fight harder to address housing affordability," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Tampa is a place for all, regardless of income level, and for this reason we are capitalizing on every opportunity, leaving no stone unturned, in an effort to bring real results and meet the needs of our residents. Opportunities like 47th Street ensure residential units are offered across a spectrum of affordability, while also providing residents with a beautiful and inviting neighborhood where their families can make positive memories, establish roots and prosper."

Interested multifamily developers with experience in utilizing land purchased with funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are encouraged to use their creativity to bring innovative and thoughtful proposals to the table by Thursday, Feb. 17.

Interested developers are required to attend a mandatory virtual pre-proposal conference on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022 at 10 a.m. The BID ID is RFP 41021722.
