Previously called Hyde Park North, the civic association reorganized in 2015 and added the name Spanishtown Creek as a nod to the community's roots as the oldest neighborhood in Tampa.

The community began as a fishing village founded by Spanish settlers in the 1800s. A creek flowed from near the corner of present-day Delaware Avenue and Platt Streets southeast into the Hillsborough Bay, giving the community its original name of Spanishtown Creek.
