Teacher Accused Of Molesting Disabled Student

A teacher at LaVoy Exceptional Center has been charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a disabled person.

TAMPA, FL — A 68-year-old teacher at LaVoy Exceptional Center faces criminal charges after allegations came to light that he may have inappropriately touched a student while on school grounds.

According to the Tampa Police Department, the incident that led to George Summers’ arrest unfolded at the 4410 W. Main St. school on Dec. 1. Summers, the police department said, touched a teenage student inappropriately and was removed from the classroom by school officials.

The police department was called, kicking off an investigation into the allegations.

“After conducting interviews, detectives charged teacher, George Summers, with lewd and lascivious molestation of a disabled person by an authority figure over a student,” the police department wrote in an email to media. Summers was brought into custody Wednesday with his arrest announced Thursday.

Summers remained in the Hillsborough County Jail Thursday in lieu of $7,500 bond. Police have not said how old the alleged victim is nor have they said whether the child is a boy or girl.

Hillsborough County School's spokeswoman Tanya Arja said the district will move for Summers' termination.
